about

For more than a hundred years, the extraction of coal from the East Kentucky mountains has played a vital role in the industrialization of the United States. And, as this history has proven, coal mining is an incredibly dangerous occupation. Miners and their families have organized, have literally fought wars, to have reasonably safe working conditions and a living wage. As the region’s coal reserves drain, so does the people’s quality of life. This original song reflects some of the hard truths about living in an extraction community at the moment of the economy’s failure.
