about

When installing high-‐speed broadband fibers in the Mountain South, a person has to be resourceful. A few years ago, in Jackson County, Kentucky, the Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative (PRTC) began the first phase of fiber-‐to-‐the-‐home (FTTH) cable installation. Industry trucks lacked the needed maneuverability. So did ATV's. Instead, PRTC called upon the services of R.C. Hibbitt's mule, Old Bub. To quote R.C., Old Bub could “…pull as much as 8 or 10 men, obey[ed] voice commands, and [stood] quietly while not on the job.” A folktale for modern times. A hope for a new economy, riding in like a savior on the back of a mule.
