“Palms of Victory” is not a hymn that I grew up with. I grew up Church of Christ. Bob Dylan’s “Paths of Victory,” which he wrote as a protest song using the hymn's melody, led me to it. The lyrics of “Palms of Victory” are believed to have been written in the 19th century and based on the story of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, a 17th century story that has become as influential on Christian theology as the Bible itself. It does not escape me that Pilgrim's Progress was written while Bunyon was in prison for civil disobedience against the Church of England's absolute authority.
